Composer John Cage experimented often, including music based on seemingly random sequances. During the 1980s, he collaborated in an art project at Mountain Lake in Virginia, creating some of the paintings on display at the show in New York. Some included smoking paper over open flame, a technique developed by painter Ray Kass, who helped lead the Mountain Lake project.

Cage's partner for many years, dancer Merce Cunningham (seated), attended the opening.

Photographed with a Canon 20D
8-megapixel digital SLR.
